You cannot use a server publishing rule to publish an HTTP server. However, you can use either the SSL Web Publishing Rule Wizard or the Server Publishing Rule Wizard to publish a Web server using HTTPS. In fact, if you choose to use SSL tunneling when you use the SSL Web Publishing Wizard, you are actually configuring a server publishing rule. To use the Server Publishing Rule Wizard to publish an HTTPS server, you must ensure that the appropriate certificate is configured on the Web server. Then start the wizard and enter the IP address of the Web server as the published server, and HTTPS server as the protocol. Because the rule will use SSL tunneling, you cannot configure the HTTP Web filter to filter any of the network traffic.

When you add a new news server, Windows Mail asks if you want to download a list of newsgroups that the server carries. Depending on the news server that you have subscribed to and the speed of your connection to the Internet, this might take some time. If you connect to your ISP s news server, do not be surprised if the number of newsgroups it downloads is well in excess of 50,000! Finding the newsgroup that you need is simplified by the search box in the Newsgroup Subscriptions dialog box, shown in Figure 9-7. (You access this dialog box by selecting Newsgroups on the Tools menu.) It is possible to search for part of a newsgroup name. It is also possible to search newsgroup descriptions for keywords. After the search query results have been returned, you can select newsgroups that interest you and click Subscribe. It is not possible to preview a group unless you have subscribed to it and accessed its articles. If you find that the newsgroup does not meet your needs, you will then have to return to the Newsgroup Subscriptions dialog box to unsubscribe from that group. Clicking the Subscribed tab lists only those groups that you are subscribed to, which greatly simplifies unsubscribing.

One of the more complicated server publishing scenarios is publishing a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) server. Many client applications use RPCs to connect to a serverbased application. The most common of these applications is an Outlook client communicating with Microsoft Exchange Server. Publishing an RPC server is difficult because RPCs use multiple ports to create the connection between the client and server. A single server may be hosting multiple

Clicking the Reset List button in the Newsgroup Subscriptions dialog box instructs Windows Mail to retrieve the entire list of newsgroups from the server. Clicking the New tab shows only those newsgroups that have been added to the list since you last subscribed or unsubscribed to newsgroups. New newsgroups are added every day, although any relevant new groups will be returned when you perform a search. Each time you connect to a news server and it has new newsgroups, you are asked if you want to view them. If you want to turn this option off, you can do it in the General tab of the Windows Mail Optionsdialog box.

RPC-based applications so the client and server must have some means of determining which application the client wants to connect to To do this, the RPC client initiates communication with the server using Port 135, which is the endpoint mapping service port The RPC client then sends the server a universally unique identifier (UUID) that identifies the specific application or service that the client wants to gain access to, and requests that the endpoint mapper send it a port number that the server will use for that application The endpoint mapper returns an available port number to the RPC client This port is randomly chosen and could be any port over 1024 The client then uses that port number to connect to the server application To provide secure access to an RPC server, ISA Server must be able to manage the UUIDs and the dynamic assignment of ports.
